Everyone thinks that stories are all about what happens… the events, the plot, the scenarios. But it isn’t – it’s about the characters and the emotion. Plot isn’t interesting unless it’s happening to someone we care about.
That’s why capturing your family’s story is so powerful. When I do your consultation I will ask you a ton of questions about your family, your partner, your children… and yes, I’m interested in what they accomplished this year. I do want to hear that Johnny just learned to ride a bike and wants to ride it every chance he gets. I do want to hear that Alice has started to walk, and that she is obsessed with your necklaces to the point you had to stop wearing them.
But what I’m really getting at is the central personality of the people in your life. Through knowing these general things, and asking you what it is you love about each member of your family, we can capture their true essence. And whether or not we capture all the THINGS, when you go back to that album 10 or 20 or 30 years later the characters will be represented in all their shining colors.
That’s what it’s all about.
