There’s a Chinese proverb that says, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
I was reminded of it today when I was emailing back and forth with a new client. She said something that I hear often from my clients, which is, “I didn’t really know what lifestyle photographers did before meeting you. I wish I had known to start doing this before they were born.”
Many of us struggle with this idea of it being too late to start something. Too late to learn something new, or start a project, or write a journal, or make a new tradition. There’s a feeling that this new practice won’t be worth as much if it doesn’t have the history. I struggle with this all the time.
This proverb grounds me. It reminds me that there’s never really a perfect time to start something new. That no matter when you start, years down the road you will have something amazing to look back on. You will be glad, then, that you started when you did instead of waiting or simply moving on.
Your story exists in the present moment. Each moment informs the next. Now is the perfect time to start capturing your joy and telling your story with lifestyle pictures of your family.
