Free Sweetheart Sessions!

I enjoy taking portraits for many occasions, but one of the things I love most is couples photography. So many times getting couples together for a portrait session not only results in a beautiful keepsake, but helps those two people to see their relationship, each other and their emotions from an outside perspective that they don’t see for themselves every day. And that can be quite a gift to give.

Because of that, I’m repeating my annual tradition of offering free Valentine’s Day Sweetheart sessions for couples this season. If there was ever a time to do it, this is it!

To take advantage you’ll have to act quickly! Call or e-mail and book a couples session with me between now and February 14th (Session to be completed any time in February) and I will waive the $60 session fee, no strings attached. I’ll even include a 10% discount on the portrait purchases from these sessions.

The number of free couple portrait sessions will only be limited by my availability! I’d like to give this gift to as many people as possible this Valentine’s Day, and help you give this gift to that special person in your life. You don’t even have to tell them it was free ;-)

Kids Are So Fun To Photograph!

I can never say it enough: I absolutely love photographing children. Parents tell me all the time “You have so much patience”. I guess they are right, but from my perspective I’m just on a play date with the kids. It’s a whole lot of fun! And it ought to be… If we aren’t having fun, how can it be expected that we’ll get great pictures?

This is the 3rd year I’ve photographed these two, and I can tell you they are true live wires! It’s always a great challenge to get them to stand still, so instead I employ one of my favorite strategies which is to see what they do naturally and figure out how to make it work. One fun game we played was leaf dodgeball. I got quite a few great shots out of this game, but the one I love the most is this candid “between” shot of the older sister because she just looks so authentically happy.

Her younger brother wanted to climb everything, so we found all kinds of great things to climb. I wish I could share more of the fun pictures from this session, but here’s a little sample to give you a taste… The holiday season is flying by and my availability is almost gone so if you’ve been procrastinating, make sure to get your appointment booked before there are no more left!

Couples Portraits

I was lucky enough to be able to photograph Amanda and Randy this week. They were on a mission, they’ve been together for 6 months and Randy’s mom requested photos for her birthday. They said they needed at least a couple great portraits for her gift, but also loved the documentary-inspired style of my work and would like for me to capture some more whimsical photos for them to keep.

This has got to be one of my favorite things to photograph. As a photographer, what could be better than a newly in love couple who are both happy and photogenic. A dream job, to be sure. Amanda’s red hair pops and their authentic emotion really came through in all the pictures. Here’s the one we got for Randy’s mom. Happy birthday!

Model Portfolio Update Photos

These two local models contacted me looking to expand and update their portfolios. I asked if they’d mind going down to the docks and hanging out until dusk so I could play with my new portable flash. Outdoor lighting is a new thing for me, this year. In the past I’ve done almost 100% available light photography unless in the studio. But since I do have lighting background and adding skills is always a good idea, I figured I would take some time to learn to combine the two environments.

Kaytie and Sean were really great to work with, and patient while I attempted to hold reflectors, aim the flash, figure out the exposure and shoot all at the same time! I also took the opportunity to play with textures in my editing process. We got some great shots, and I really appreciate the experience. Thanks you two!

Dynamic Toddler Photo Session

Toddlers are certainly forces of nature. When I head out to a toddler portrait session, I prepare myself for all possibilities. Depending on the day and time, a photographer might encounter anything! Some toddlers are so shy that mom’s hand or leg is in every shot while others are so eager to get moving that mom and I are both left running the whole session!

I was nervous when I first arrived at this particular session because when I called mom to let her know I was outside, I was informed that they were waking her up from a nap and would be 10 minutes late. Waking up from a nap can certainly be unpleasant for all involved, but little Kay surprised us all with her good spirits! I did end up touching out a few pillow wrinkles on her cheek, but by the end of this session I was so happy I could barely contain myself. I always love kid photo sessions, but this one just really put a smile on my face. I hope it does yours, too!

Urban Sweetheart Couples Session

I had a fabulous time with the sweetheart sessions booked through my Valentine’s Day free session promotion. I’ve just got to share this one as it was so much fun! These guys were up for anything, including standing on a giant pedestal in downtown Portland and letting me set up lights and put them literally on display. Couples are so much fun to photograph. I love watching their interactions and capturing these special relationships.

First Birthday Cake Photos

Kids change so much during their first years, and the first birthday is an exciting one because the whole experience is brand new! Last weekend I had the joy of documenting little Kaylee’s first birthday cake encounter. She took it like a champ, and was very thoughtful about the whole thing. I was expecting a bit more mess, honestly, but she ate like a princess… for the most part. I did manage to capture some frosting on her darling face, though, and we all had a lot of laughs about it. I look forward to seeing how much she’s changed by her next birthday!

Being Visible: Serravision Video Production!

Today I had a multi-purpose photo session! I took some ridiculously adorable photographs of these two little ones while I was filmed and a few other former clients were interviewed in order to produce a short promotional video for Serravision Photography.

As a photographer who’s used to being able to come home and look at the work, it’s quite odd to have that video footage walk off with someone else. Sure hope it came out well, I know my photos did! Thank you so much to my clients who were kind enough to speak about their experience for my video!

Engagement Photos Around Portland

This beautiful couple is getting married this summer, I had so much fun taking them down to the waterfront for engagement photos! We walked all around and managed to do a variety of urban settings. I couldn’t include nearly as many as I would have wanted to since they all came out so well!

I just love doing engagement photos, because the atmosphere is so happy and light. It’s a perfect time to get some beautiful pictures taken before the wedding day when everything happens too fast. I include an engagement session with every wedding I book, because I think it’s so valuable.

Mesh Pro Band Publicity Photos

I did a promotional shoot yesterday with Mesh Pro, a local Portland-area indie hip hop band. I love working with groups and being creative. Having 5 adults in a shot is not always easy and I had to get inventive with ways to put them on different planes and levels. It was fun playing with a new aesthetic and taking portraits that are a little edgy and fit the image of this local band.
