What to Wear for a Successful Portrait Session

What to Wear for a Successful Portrait Session

Many people ask me what to wear to their portrait session. Here are a few hints but just remember, the most important thing is to feel good in what you are wearing, because wearing something that feels inauthentic results in photos where you look like you feel inauthentic… and what’s the point of a portrait other than to capture you or your child as you are!

New Year Maternity Session

New Year Maternity Session

I love doing these late-term pregnancy pictures, because I know they will be so fun to look back on, and share with the child in a few years. You can point to your belly and say “that was you!”.

November Girl

Three week old Emma sports her full head of hair and teeny tiny toes wrapped in this little pink pod courtesy of Sarah Garrison, a local artist!

Holiday Party Photo Booth Mania!

Holiday Party Photo Booth Mania!

I had a great job this past weekend at a holiday party. The hostess said “I just want some fun pictures”, so I suggested setting up a sort of photo booth in the basement. I brought lights and encouraged people to have fun with it, and the results are some really spectacular photographs that are not at all your typical party candids!

Being Visible

Being Visible

Today I had a multi-purpose photo session!  I took some ridiculously adorable photographs of these two little ones while I was filmed and a few other former clients were interviewed in order to produce a short promotional video for Serravision Photography.
As a photographer who’s used to being able to come home and look at the [...]

Going to the Dogs!

Going to the Dogs!

My Halloween was spent in the park shooting holiday card portraits with this lovely couple and their two gorgeous dogs, and the portraits we achieved are way cute!

It’s Not Just Business

It’s Not Just Business

I did my first in-home-studio session yesterday. They’re just standard business head shots, but I’m excited because you’d never know I wasn’t in the studio!

Solstice Wedding

Solstice Wedding

After their many years together, I was honored to capture this couple’s absolutely perfect wedding day, many years of happiness await you.

Engagement Photos on a Walkabout

Engagement Photos on a Walkabout

This beautiful couple is getting married this summer, I had so much fun taking them down to the waterfront for engagement photos!  We walked all around and managed to do a variety of urban settings.  I couldn’t include nearly as many as I would have wanted to since they all came out so well!  We [...]

Double Model Shoot

Double Model Shoot

These two local models contacted me looking to expand and update their portfolios.  I asked if they’d mind going down to the docks and hanging out until dusk so I could play with my new portable flash.  They were really great to work with, and patient while I attempted to hold reflectors, aim the flash, [...]

Mesh Pro Publicity Shoot

Mesh Pro Publicity Shoot

I did a promotional shoot yesterday with Mesh Pro, a local Portland-area indie hip hop band. I love working with groups and being creative.  Having 5 adults in a shot is not always easy and I had to get inventive with ways to put them on different planes and levels.
I achieved looks in this [...]

Senior Portraits in the Studio

Senior Portraits in the Studio

It’s so much fun, and such a challenge, to meet a young person and in 10-15 minutes deduce who they are, who they want to portray themselves as, and build enough rapport that they trust you not to embarrass them.

Urban Model Shoot

Urban Model Shoot

Having just moved to the Portland area, I wanted to explore new locations to shoot. The bridges, railroads, river, skyline and industrial architecture made for some very interesting frames.

And Then There Were Toes

And Then There Were Toes

There is something delightful about toes to a baby, and about a baby playing with his or her toes to a parent. Photographers are not immune to this!

Day at the Park

Day at the Park

I like to play in these situations and take more traditional shots with everyone smiling and looking at the camera as well as more non-traditional shots that are more like a slice of life and then put them together.

Two Squared

Two Squared

Few things are more challenging than pre-speech twins, but if you know the right moves they can be a blast, and the portraits can be so cute!

Newborn in the Summer

Newborn in the Summer

Summer is such a great time for newborn babies, which of course translates to this newborn portrait session.

Celebrating Life

Celebrating Life

This loving couple were brave enough to bare belly in the arboretum, with some stunning portraits as the result.  What more could a photographer want than a beautiful couple who fully embrace the baby they’re expecting and want to display her beginnings in such a stunning natural setting.  I love the fact that mom wore [...]

The Beginning

The Beginning

I’ve done a couple maternity shoots over the last week, which means some new newborn shoots are coming! I enjoyed doing the maternity shoots more than I expected, and I’m really happy with the way they came out. It’s neat because yes it’s about the belly but also it’s about the very beginnings [...]

Little Caterpillar

Little Caterpillar

I’m on a roll with kids lately, which is awesome!  at 3 weeks old, his little newborn girl (who’s parents lovingly call her their “Little Caterpillar”) is the youngest in my portfolio so far, so the session was full of new challenges and things to think about. It’s amazing how different it is photographing [...]

50mm Prime

50mm Prime

I got myself a new lens recently, and went over to try it out on my friend’s little girl. It has no zoom which I’m not at all used to so it was interesting to get used to moving myself around so much but it’s totally worth it for the 1.8 F-stop! Check [...]

My first baby!

My first baby!

Although I’ve been photographing babies for going on 6 years now professionally, this is the first I’ve done independently and therefore the first I’ve done without the confidence that comes from studio lighting, and the comfort of having all of the quilts, seamless backdrops, and posing tools I’m accustomed to.
It forced me to [...]

Photo shoot with Tori Marie

Photo shoot with Tori Marie

Here are a couple from a shoot I did downtown with Tori Marie, a young new model who has a lot of promise. I love how she uses her eyes! I threw a couple “urban” shots in to spice things up a bit, hope you enjoy!
