I had a fabulous head shot session yesterday in Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, which is just north of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland, Oregon. I’m so glad I got the chance to explore the park, it offered such a variety of backdrops and they were all perfect for the subject, who is a life coach. She was thrilled to have her photos against a natural background and I was thrilled to get that idyllic bokeh from the marsh reeds and spring leaves all around us. I think this might become a staple for Portland portrait sessions!

I believe that business head shots should really represent an individual, and should say something about their business itself. So when I was asked to take some headshots for my neighbor, who does healing, community building and gardening, it was an obvious choice to go to her garden.

It was such a fun challenge, since I wasn’t sure where the boundaries were for her on the traditional and unconventional ends of things, so I took all kinds of different photos! It turned out that she was down for all kinds of different things and as a result the session was stunningly sucessful! I love the textures and backgrounds that her plants offered. Thanks so much, Molly!

I did my first in-home-studio session yesterday. I moved the dining room table, hung my black velvet backdrop in front of the bedroom door, set up my light kit and did professional head shots right in my dining room! They’re just standard business head shots, but the cool thing is that you’d never know I wasn’t in the studio. For an in-home studio job, I think they came out really well!

These two local models contacted me looking to expand and update their portfolios. I asked if they’d mind going down to the docks and hanging out until dusk so I could play with my new portable flash. They were really great to work with, and patient while I attempted to hold reflectors, aim the flash, figure out the exposure and shoot all at the same time! I also took the opportunity to play with textures in my editing process. We got some great shots, and I really appreciate the experience. Thanks you two!

It’s so much fun, and such a challenge, to meet a young person and in 10-15 minutes deduce who they are, who they want to portray themselves as, and build enough rapport that they trust you not to embarrass them. Each success makes me so happy, especially when I manage to please both the student and the parents. This senior portrait session was, by all accounts, a smashing success and I really am glad the family agreed, and gave me permission to share! Thanks Shauna!

Having just moved to the Portland area, I wanted to explore new locations to shoot. This model shoot seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore the SE Industrial area. The bridges, railroads, river, skyline and industrial architecture made for some very interesting frames. The outfit Jesse wore really worked with the scene, and I had a great time playing with elevation and lines in this shoot, as well as forshortening. Overall, a fun and eductational shoot with fabulous portraits to show for it.

The goal of the shoot was mainly to capture her in motion, as well as to get some head shots of her.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_63OfvmlEgzU/Rvzr2BGvBbI/AAAAAAAAAB0/i7tYycfrcM4/s200/IMG_7303_Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115222590028187058" />

The park is beautiful, but very parky in that there are fences and benches and parked cars and people and dogs all over the place. Because of this it was a challenge to find spots that were empty for long enough expanses that we could shoot and have it look like she was alone.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_63OfvmlEgzU/Rvzs3RGvBcI/AAAAAAAAAB8/jKKd2-eioBE/s200/IMG_7191_Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115223711014651330" />We had a great time, though, and I think we did a good job of making it hard to tell that anyone else existed. She’s so beautiful, and she made it easy to capture stunning images! I’ve (obviously) included a couple of the shots from the shoot here, to see more you can go to my new serravision flickr page!
