I was lucky enough to be able to photograph Amanda and Randy this week. They were on a mission, they’ve been together for 6 months and Randy’s mom requested photos for her birthday. They said they needed at least a couple great portraits for her gift, but also loved the documentary-inspired style of my work and would like for me to capture some more whimsical photos for them to keep.

This has got to be one of my favorite things to photograph. As a photographer, what could be better than a newly in love couple who are both happy and photogenic. A dream job, to be sure. Amanda’s red hair pops and their authentic emotion really came through in all the pictures. Here’s the one we got for Randy’s mom. Happy birthday!

Tips For Photographing Rainy Oregon Weddings

Who says a little rain will ruin your wedding day? This is Oregon! At this wedding we saw it all. Glorious sunshine, light drizzle, torrential downpours, and even hail! Here’s some advice on how to handle a rainy wedding:

Most importantly, have a great attitude!

A little rain never hurt anything...

This event is not about anything but a beautiful relationship. Sometimes the amount of time and energy that has gone into planning an event makes it easy to forget this simple fact. As a photographer, your job is to remind the couple and their friends and family that the day is perfect despite the rain. How can you do this?

Assure them that you are prepared, confident, and not concerned about the weather. You may know this, but it isn’t obvious to your clients unless you tell them!
Remind them that clouds and rain actually create stunning imagery!
Bring a raincoat for you, and one for your gear! You can go DIY and cover your camera with plastic bags (here’s an interesting DIY tutorial) or for a few bucks you can pick something up that’s specifically designed for your camera. I like the ones with arm covers, like this one from KATA.
Wear waterproof boots! I prefer hiking boots to rain boots, for good all-terrain grip. No matter how formal the event, if you’re worried about getting wet, your clients will be too. And the last thing they need to be thinking about on their wedding day is the photographer’s feet!
Be flexible and take opportunities as they present themselves. Don’t worry if you were planning on doing formals before the ceremony and it’s raining cats and dogs. Simply reassure them that it will be fine to do them later, and let them know you’ll be in charge of choosing the best time for their photography. Trusting in you will give them the freedom to enjoy their wedding!

Vintage Modern Wedding

I had the pleasure of capturing photos from this beautiful wedding last weekend. I enjoyed the couple immensely, they did everything on a shoestring including having their family supply a potluck-style brunch!

The bride had such a great look, with a mix of modern and vintage pieces. Her veil was made by a friend and was absolutely stunning, one of the most fun pieces to photograph! The relaxed atmosphere led to a uniquely casual set of portraits that illustrate this couple just beautifully. I wish them many years of happiness!

Urban Sweetheart Couples Session

I had a fabulous time with the sweetheart sessions booked through my Valentine’s Day free session promotion. I’ve just got to share this one as it was so much fun! These guys were up for anything, including standing on a giant pedestal in downtown Portland and letting me set up lights and put them literally on display. Couples are so much fun to photograph. I love watching their interactions and capturing these special relationships.

Cape Cod Wedding Photos

I adore casual wedding assignments. This wedding was a beautiful traditional Jewish wedding on the shoreline at Cape Cod in Massachusetts. The family prepared everything, the food, flowers, cake and decorations. The bride and groom welcomed me into their day and treated me like family and as a result I was allowed to capture some really intimate photos that they will be able to treasure. This was truly an example of wedding photography as it should be!

Photography Is For The Dogs

My Halloween was spent in the park shooting holiday card portraits with this lovely couple and their two gorgeous dogs! These guys were just the nicest clients one could hope for, and I love the outfits they chose. I always say my clients dress better than I ever could have told them to if I’d had the choice and this is a perfect example. Check out those multi-color knit leggings!

I have very little experience photographing dogs, but they worked with me and the portraits we achieved are way cute. Although I do realize I dressed up as myself which is universally considered to be rather lame, I couldn’t have asked for a better Halloween!

Engagement Photos Around Portland

This beautiful couple is getting married this summer, I had so much fun taking them down to the waterfront for engagement photos! We walked all around and managed to do a variety of urban settings. I couldn’t include nearly as many as I would have wanted to since they all came out so well!

I just love doing engagement photos, because the atmosphere is so happy and light. It’s a perfect time to get some beautiful pictures taken before the wedding day when everything happens too fast. I include an engagement session with every wedding I book, because I think it’s so valuable.
