Big Girl Birthday Portraits

Well, it has been quite a while since my last blog post! There has been a lot going on, and before it gets any further out of hand I want to share with you this beautiful little girl whose five-year-old birthday was in May. I took photos of her last year when she was four years old, and it was so much fun to see how much she’s come out of her shell over the past year! I always like following clients over time and watching kids and families grow.

The day of our session was very cloudy and even a little drizzly which made for a fun, adventurous energy and super even lighting.

One of the best compliments I can get is when, at the end of a photo session, the child asks if I can come home with them. Building that kind of rapport with each of the kids I photograph allows my sessions to end with a variety of fun, natural, and beautiful photos that give childrens’ families a window into that time in their child’s life to treasure for years to come.

I also shot 4-year old portraits of her younger brother who, incidentally, was shy for his pictures just like she was last year. Maybe next year he will come out of his shell just like she did, but either way it’s fine with me! To me, the shy photos often come out equally as cute, and I’ll find time to share some of the amazing shots from his session soon.

Dynamic Toddler Session

Toddlers are certainly forces of nature. When I head out to a toddler portrait session, I prepare myself for all possibilities. Depending on the day and time, a photographer might encounter anything! Some toddlers are so shy that mom’s hand or leg is in every shot while others are so eager to get moving that mom and I are both left running the whole session!

I was nervous when I first arrived at this particular session because when I called mom to let her know I was outside, I was informed that they were waking her up from a nap and would be 10 minutes late. Waking up from a nap can certainly be unpleasant for all involved, but little Kay surprised us all with her good spirits! I did end up touching out a few pillow wrinkles on her cheek, but by the end of this session I was so happy I could barely contain myself. I always love kid photo sessions, but this one just really put a smile on my face. I hope it does yours, too!

Why I take Photographs

Maternity Photo Collage from 2008

There are so many reasons why I love taking photographs. The most compelling reason I can come up with off the top of my head this morning is the desire to share this life with people and capture it’s beauty.

Every portrait session is unique in its energy, its purpose, and its style in the moment. I love sitting down and looking through the photography that I’ve captured, but it’s just that much more rewarding when the photos find their way back to me again. For example, a mom that I worked with for maternity and newborn portraits back in 2008 sent me a note recently.

She said about her now one and a half year old daughter, “Ixa currently drags around the collage you made of my pregnancy pictures and talks about it all the time- it’s her favorite mama picture at the moment! thanks again!!”

If you’ve had doubts about why it’s important to allow a professional photographer to help you capture your memories, here’s just one testament to it’s true value.

First Birthday Cake

Kids change so much during their first years, and the first birthday is an exciting one because the whole experience is brand new! Last weekend I had the joy of documenting little Kaylee’s first birthday cake encounter. She took it like a champ, and was very thoughtful about the whole thing. I was expecting a bit more mess, honestly, but she ate like a princess… for the most part. I did manage to capture some frosting on her darling face, though, and we all had a lot of laughs about it. I look forward to seeing how much she’s changed by her next birthday!

Being Visible

Today I had a multi-purpose photo session! I took some ridiculously adorable photographs of these two little ones while I was filmed and a few other former clients were interviewed in order to produce a short promotional video for Serravision Photography.

As a photographer who’s used to being able to come home and look at the work, it’s quite odd to have that video footage walk off with someone else. Sure hope it came out well, I know my photos did! Thank you so much to my clients who were kind enough to speak about their experience for my video!

Day at the Park

These kids were so much fun! They all have so much personality and I like when the personalities are all unique. Little Michael was so shy, while his big sisters loved the camera. I like to play in these situations and take more traditional shots with everyone smiling and looking at the camera as well as more non-traditional shots that are more like a slice of life and then put them together. I think their personalities really come through in this one, it turned out so cute!

Three siblings are a handful, but makes for some great possibilities!

Two Squared

Few things are more challenging than pre-speech twins, but if you know the right moves they can be a blast, and the portraits can be so cute! These two were very unsure about the camera and I got a lot of pouty close-ups, but once mom got involved and we did some games and flying we got a couple real winners! I can’t believe how fast these boys are growing, it seems like only yesterday they were 6 lbs each. Maybe next time they’ll be talking!
