Studio Maternity Portraits

I am so lucky to have such a beautiful family working with me on building examples for the baby’s first year package! Not only did I get a gorgeous, confident and totally sweet mom, Amber, but I also get to work with her amazing husband and super-cute 9-year-old daughter over the next year while we document new baby Wyatt’s first year of life. We are starting at the beginning, before he is born, and by the end of the year we’ll have a fabulous range of photography to illustrate the beauty of this journey.

My very first session using mon Amour Photography’s studio space was exciting at every turn, and I can’t wait to do more sessions in the studio. Amber and her family were real troopers and we did hundreds of exposures, capturing everything from fun and casual family shots to dramatic artistic portraits. Although I adore working on-site and outdoors, it is obvious that I have missed working in the studio. I’m readily welcoming the return to this completely different environment.

So the news is in, baby’s first year is launched. Beta deal is $399 for 6 sessions* (regularly $900!) with a framed portrait collage free at the end of the year. If you know someone who would like to get in on the baby’s first year package before the sample packages roll out next year, send them over! The deal is on.

First Birthday Cake

Kids change so much during their first years, and the first birthday is an exciting one because the whole experience is brand new! Last weekend I had the joy of documenting little Kaylee’s first birthday cake encounter. She took it like a champ, and was very thoughtful about the whole thing. I was expecting a bit more mess, honestly, but she ate like a princess… for the most part. I did manage to capture some frosting on her darling face, though, and we all had a lot of laughs about it. I look forward to seeing how much she’s changed by her next birthday!

New Year Maternity Session

I had the pleasure of taking portraits of this beautiful woman in the last stages of her pregnancy. Her due date was January 1st, but as far as I know she’s still waiting on the little one to show up! I love doing these late-term pregnancy pictures, because I know they will be so fun to look back on, and share with the child in a few years. You can point to your belly and say “that was you!”. I especially liked the window light in this session, it functioned like a soft box allowing me to capture that backlit glow that makes everything seem just a bit ethereal. Thanks, Serena, and thanks for managing to get your husband in there too! Have a fabulous new year!

November Girl

This lovely little girl was such a champ, her mom and dad brought her into the studio and although I’d been there for 3 hours trying to warm it up, it was hardly 60 degrees in the room and just would not warm up! We had two space heaters on her and wrapped her in this little pink pod courtesy of Sarah Garrison, a local artist, and she finally fell asleep so we could get a few adorable shots. Thanks for sharing your daughter, and letting me take her first photographs!

And Then There Were Toes

It’s inevitable that around 5-6 months old each of us discovers our toes. There is something delightful about toes to a baby, and about a baby playing with his or her toes to a parent. Photographers are not immune to this! Little Audrey has reached that phase of life and it was all I could do not to put in 3 thumbnails of her playing with her toes! She’s getting so big, and so ridiculously cute!!! I can’t wait to watch her as she continues to grow.

Newborn in the Summer

Summer is such a great time for newborn babies. This little one just never wears clothes, it’s warm and comfortable and natural and beautiful, which of course translates to her newborn portrait session. We took her outside and lounged around, lying on mom’s belly or in dad’s arms. Then we set up a blanket in her boppy and put her down for a nap amongst petals from the rose bush. I just can’t get over the beauty of this day.

Celebrating Life

This loving couple were brave enough to bare belly in the arboretum, with some stunning portraits as the result. What more could a photographer want than a beautiful couple who fully embrace the baby they’re expecting and want to display her beginnings in such a stunning natural setting. I love the fact that mom wore bright celebratory colors and dad was so supportive, the whole session made me realize how great it would be if all expectant mothers were so proud. Best of luck to you two (three!).

The Beginning

I’ve done a couple maternity shoots over the last week, which means some new newborn shoots are coming! I enjoyed doing the maternity shoots more than I expected, and I’m really happy with the way they came out. It’s neat because yes it’s about the belly but also it’s about the very beginnings of a relationship, as well as the relationship between the existing family members. I chose a couple of my favorites but there were so many that I liked that the ones I chose are kind of at random. You’ll have to go to my flickr page to see more.

Little Caterpillar

I’m on a roll with kids lately, which is awesome! at 3 weeks old, his little newborn girl (who’s parents lovingly call her their “Little Caterpillar”) is the youngest in my portfolio so far, so the session was full of new challenges and things to think about. It’s amazing how different it is photographing infants in locations outside the familiar studio environment. But I’m learning to use the new surroundings to my advantage. I think the portraits came out really well!

50mm Prime

I got myself a new lens recently, and went over to try it out on my friend’s little girl. It has no zoom which I’m not at all used to so it was interesting to get used to moving myself around so much but it’s totally worth it for the 1.8 F-stop! Check out that depth of field! What fun! I love it!
